Kronborg Castle in Elsinore, at the Sound of Øresund, is one of northern Europe's most important Renaissance castles. Known all over the world from Shakespeare's Hamlet, it is also the most famous castle in Denmark with about 200,000 visitors each year.
For the seventh year running Kronborg opens its doors for Christmas cheer throughout December with the focus on quality, design and historic atmosphere.
One high point is the Arts and Crafts Christmas Market in the first two weekends of December. A new feature in 2013 is the Food & Drink Christmas Market for the gourmets in the third weekend.
And then of course you can buy the traditional Christmas fare – glögg (mulled, spiced wine) and small Danish doughnuts, and drive in a horsedrawn carriage between the Christmas markets in the town of Helsingør (Elsinore).
See where the danish renaissance kings and queens lived whenever they were in residence at Kronborg Castle and take af walk through the Casemates - the damp, low areas, where soldiers would stay for longer periods during sieges and bombardments. Guided tours in English for individual guests are free with a valid ticket.
